McClain Barrel Maintenance System
The McClain Barrel Maintenance System introduced in 2011 incorporates an Ozone Sanitation System, Ozone Compatible Pressure Washer and a GamaJet Barrel Blaster to provide one step cleaning and sanitation of barrels. The advantages of the system include 1) reduction of water usage (up to 5O%), 2) elimination of cost of heat (hot water/steam) and its negative impact on barrel flavors, and 2) reduction of time and labor used for the barrel treatment process. I addition, since the system is componentized the ozone sanitation system and pressure washer can be utilized as multifunctional tools individually throughout the winery for additional cleaning and sanitation activities.
Testimonial: “I recently replaced my old ozone system and barrel washer system with a new McClain Destroyer mated to an ozone compatible pressure washer and a GamaJet Barrel Blaster. My barrels have never been cleaner. All the tartrates and lees are easily and quickly removed from my barrels after only a few minutes of washing time. We use cold water, and less of it. My water usage is down by at least 50%. Since the ozone machine is separate from the pressure washer, I still have the option to use hot water to clean barrels, but I seldom see the need. In addition, since my ozone machine has the option to generate O3 gas, I can use it to preserve and protect empty barrels.”

The wand has a two setting stainless ball valve (manual open and lock open) and properly sized perforated stainless fill tube which allows the operator to easily perform the barrel gassing protocol.
Aqueous Ozone Test Kit – Effective sanitizing with ozonated water depends on two important factors: ozone concentration in the water and contact time (CT = Concentration [ppm] x Time [minutes]). Variables such as water temperature and water quality (i.e. dissolved metals, organic matter, etc.) will affect the amount of dissolved ozone in the water. These variables make it necessary to periodically check the ozone concentration in order to determine the contact time needed for effective sanitation. In addition, periodic testing of the dissolved ozone in the water is the operator’s best method of testing the ozone system for proper operation. The aqueous ozone test kit is used for these purposes.
Portable Ozone Gaseous Sensors– The sensors, which have a rechargeable battery, are used to monitor the ozone concentration in the atmosphere where ozone is being utilized. The sensors are utilized to 1) develop sanitation protocols and 2) periodically test for background atmospheric ozone during sanitation protocols. The OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) is 0.1 ppm for the 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA) and 0.3 ppm for the fifteen-minute Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL).
- LED Sensor – The LED Sensor has a three-color LED display bar graph which indicates ozone levels in parts per million (PPM) from 0.02 to 0.14. This sensor is commonly used for safety background monitoring.
- Digital Sensor – The Digital Sensor has reads ozone levels in parts per million (ppm) from 0.0 to 10.0. This sensor can be utilized for both background safety monitoring and also for space gassing quantification.
Tri-Clamp to Garden Hose Adaptors – The set includes tri-clamps, gaskets and male/female garden hose thread adaptors which allow the operator to connect the McClain Ozone system to standard garden hoses.
Ozone Sanitation Equipment Selection Considerations
We have provided this document to aid individuals in the selection of ozone sanitation equipment. The following information on ozone system selection and McClain Ozone systems is provided for your information and review. We are looking forward to working with you on your sanitation challenges.
If you are looking at ozone sanitation systems there are several things to consider:
- Manufacturer’s Presence in the Industry McClain Ozone Inc. pioneered the use of ozone as a sanitizer and is the industry leader in the production of mobile and dedicated ozone sanitation systems (Client List available on request). We exceed all industry and safety standards and are EPA Registered, NSF Registered, and OSHA Compliant.
- Measurable Dissolved Ozone Concentration in the Water The concentration of ozone in the process water is critical to successful sanitation. The classic sanitation formula is illustrated below.
Concentration (ppm) x Time (minutes) = CT Value
As can be seen in the CT formula, the higher the concentration of ozone in the water the lower the time required to do the job. Reducing job time has the cost saving and environmental benefits of reducing labor and saving process water. McClain’s concentration, degassing and destruct system provides our sanitation systems with the industry’s highest concentration of ozone in the water.
- Equipment Safety and Employee Training and Certification McClain sanitation systems are EPA Registered, NSF Registered and OSHA Compliant. We believe that the safe and effective use of ozone is dependent on employee knowledge and competence. Therefore, all sales include on-site or media training and Certification of your employees on standard operating procedures and the safe use of ozone in the workplace.
- Equipment Reliability and Warranties McClain sanitation systems provide proven reliability. Our systems are used by hundreds of clients worldwide and we are happy to furnish client references. In addition, McClain technology and reliability is backed by the best warranty in the industry.
- System Size and Mobility, Application Flexibility, Ease of Operation, and Water Flow Capacity McClain sanitation systems have been designed with the input of sanitation workers worldwide. These designs emphasize small size, mobility, application flexibility, and ease of operation. Water flow capacity is an important consideration in ozone applications (i.e. a container washer may require 8 gpm while a tank washer may require 25 gpm. McClain systems allow for a range of flows to allow the client application flexibility using the same system.
- “Ozone-on-Demand” McClain Ozone developed the concept of “Ozone-on-Demand” and it is incorporated into all of our sanitation systems. “Ozone-on-Demand” is simply the direct delivery of ozonated water from the sanitation system to the point of use. These systems provide on demand ozonation, degassing and delivery of ozonated water to the point of use at variable flow rates.Although this seems a simple concept, historically ozone systems utilized recirculation tanks to degas and store ozonated water and the water was then taken from the tank to the point of use. This type of system required continually running ozone and recirculation systems, large storage tanks, auxiliary pumps, hard piping installations, constant flow rates and did not lend themselves to mobile point-of –use applications.
- Available Options and Upgrade Ability McClain offers numerous options some of which are only available on our systems. In addition, all systems are upgradeable both for ozone and options (see individual systems for available options and descriptions).
- Technical Support and Service McClain offers factory and Distributor technical support, parts and service worldwide. Our systems are modular for ease of service and require no specialized tools. Service training for maintenance personnel is available for a fee.
